Folks in Seattle from Coates Design Architects have a sweet tooth for concrete (so do we but I guess you got the idea already). The home they built the Dorsey Residence was designed as a structure that maximizes footprint by the use of vertical space. From afar it does look like an anonymous austere monumental concrete two-story building on the waterfront. Upon entering a new world opens up in front of you; it’s warm light and open.
The exterior of the house takes its inspiration from Japanese design as clean lines and a semi-minimalist approach give the structure a very unique understated style. Exposed concrete is combined with warm wooden surfaces to create an inviting setting. Once inside large pendant light installations exquisite decor and a cool color palette take over. One can’t help but notice an unmistakable Asian style indoors as stylish wooden accents offer the necessary textural contrast.
Modern homes are all about creating a dynamic and seamless interaction between the indoors and the surrounding landscape. The in Italy is another such stylish residence that accentuates the relationship between nature and architecture by using several green design solutions.
My favorite piece is the custom 14′ long chandelier over the dining table which I designed and had fabricated specifically for this project. It was hand-cast to resemble a large tree branch with clusters of quartz crystals and tiny LED lights.
Check out the windows in the kitchen below. For many loft spaces imperfect windows are a true plus bringing a sense of history and character home. Also note how open shelving contributes to the distinct style of this room:
The lower level is clad in chic pristine white with a living room dining area and a fabulous kitchen connected in an open floor plan. Hand-scraped oak floors and pops of color here and there perfectly complement this glossy white lacquered look.
But the exterior contours were kept as untouched as possible to ensure that the renovation was both economical and aesthetically pleasing. A lovely little living area sits next to a beautiful kitchen and dining space which are all visually connected to the spacious backyard.
